New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - The January 2009 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (75 937) was 0.8% lower than the corresponding estimate for December 2008 and 16.5% lower than the trend estimate 12 months earlier. Decreases in the trend estimate have now been recorded for 13 consecutive months.
• Seasonally adjusted - The January 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (76 224) decreased by 1.1% compared with December 2008.

• Trend - When trend estimates for January 2009 are compared with December 2008, passenger vehicle sales declined 0.5%, sports utility vehicle sales decreased by 0.1% and sales of other vehicles fell by 2.1%. Compared with figures 12 months earlier, sales of all vehicle types were lower in January 2009. Sales of sports utility vehicles have decreased by 22.3%, passenger vehicles by 15.4% and other vehicles by 14.2% when compared with the January 2008 level.
• Seasonally adjusted - On a seasonally adjusted basis, January 2009 sales of passenger vehicles and sports utility vehicles increased by 0.8% and 0.5% respectively when compared with December 2008. The January 2009 sales of other vehicle types however, were 7.5% lower than in December 2008.

• Trend - Australian Capital Territory was the only state or territory for which the January 2009 trend estimate of total new vehicle sales exceeded the trend estimate for December 2008. The increase of 1.0% contrasts with decreases in all other states, the largest being in Western Australia (2.1%), Tasmania (2.0%) and Northern Territory (1.6%).
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing January 2009 with December 2008, Tasmania was the only state to show an increase in the seasonally adjusted estimate of total vehicle sales with a rise of 4.0%. Northern Territory decreased by the largest proportion, with seasonally adjusted sales falling by 7.1% compared with December 2008. Decreases of over 1% also occurred in South Australia (1.6%), Western Australia (1.5%) and Victoria (1.2%).
